      Longswords are not meant for blunt force or breaking bones at all (no sword is), they're thin, tapered & with most of their mass in the hilt, the exact opposite of something intended for blunt force We have historical longsword treatises showing how they were used

    I don't think this can be a 100% true assessment as you're using a dull sparring katana. A sharpened katana in the hands of a samurai would turn the longsword into a short sword.

    Interesting comparison, Most weapons with a long history have evolved and improved along with the techniques for their use until neither the manufacturing technology and design nor the techniques can be improved significantly. Also to be taken into account is that both longsword and katana were considered weapons of chivalry with tradtional 'rules of engagement' when wielded by those who considered themselves bound by the rules of chivalry.

    I just wish that some half-swording was employed here, as it would take away a key point for the katana, the close range capabilities. This long sword would be capable of getting in closer with stabs to key areas. I also wish he showed the longswords ability to be switched around, and the guard used as a hammer (a real medieval technique) The long sword is so much more versatile against armoured and unarmoured opponents, while the katana is marginally better against just unarmoured opponents

    • @Cerberusarms
      @Cerberusarms 5 днів тому

      The only real reason to halfsword is to help accurately pierce the weak point in someone’s armor. It’s a luxury granted to you by wearing full plate armor and chain mail. In an unarmored duel against a katana the time it takes you to grab the blade of a longsword your head would already be split in half. He didn’t use halfswording during sparring cause no one in that position would, it would get you killed. If anything a katana is easier to halfsword than a double edged longsword so why is it somehow an advantage for the European sword?

    Katanas are supposed to be somewhat tip-heavy. That’s one of the reasons why they are good cutters. 1. Forward balance - hits with lots of force/authority. 2. Edge geometry - once the blade has entered the target, the profile of the blade (this varies from sword to sword) glides through the rest of the target. 3. Rigidity - Katanas are thick chunky swords, and a lot of them (yes, even historical ones) don’t have much distal taper, this of course lends to the tip-heaviness, but more importantly, it makes the blade stiff and causes the sword to have very slight wobble in cuts. Makes it a forgiving cutter. Hollywood has tricked people into thinking that Japanese swords (and really all Asian swords) are these weightless nimble things you can swing endlessly with one in each hand.

    Japanese steel was actually inferior to English for the reason of the impurities of the minerals. Thats why they folded the metal so many times in the forging process. But they did a great job making awesome weapons with what they had. That being said English steel swords were probably a lot faster to make because of this

    • @Cerberusarms
      @Cerberusarms 5 днів тому

      They were definitely easier to make than katanas, not really sure that makes them better.

    • @BuddyG-zz8qt
      @BuddyG-zz8qt 5 днів тому

      @@Cerberusarms high carbon content in Japanese steel made it hard and brittle. Not as corrosion resistant. Not saying the English sword was necessarily “better” but European steel took a lot less to make a viable and durable war sword. I’ve always love the samurai sword. It’s gorgeous. So are European war swords. Very cool what smiths could do back in those days. Lots of the functional swords made today of both varieties are made with a steel different from the past which makes them even more badass. Maybe the new ones can cut a car in half. I’ll try it on my 84 honda later today

    The MAA Italian is 3/4 the price of the original Italian Long Sword. I don't know, why anyone would save $100 on a sword in this price range. Regarding how many years, how many centuries this item will last and how often you'll have fun with it and how much the increased quality will make you more happy, the cheaper option makes no sense - actually only if you buy it for the looks, but then i guess you're better off with a Windlass Battlecry long sword.

  • @nicholasromero2590

    Both deadly, when it comes to head on blade to blade the European long sword would cut katanas in half all the time. The key here of using a katana against a European long sword is to disarm the user by cutting vital spots first then finishing him off, in other words never let them swing directly at your blade and you have a chance.

    Katanas would have looked a lot different over the years if the Japanese had been subjected to other cultures, weapons and warefare like what was happening across Europe and mainland Asia. Because Japan was in a bubble, katanas were made specifically to fight people with similar style swords and armor as themselves, like tachis and various braided materials. By the time the japanese ran into the Portuguese and European weaponry, Europeans had moved on and they weren't dealing with guys with longswords and chainmail, or even plate armor. They were dealing with guys from the future with cannons and guns.
